Either way it doesn't matter because our percussion instructor (new this year) put in an order for some new rims, and 6 more rim savers.

Also, over the summer my school had the most people at a Yamaha Sounds of Summer camp and we are getting all new bass heads free. Except that we had to pay to go to that camp so not exactly free, but close.

ok can i put this out there..

as a bass player for some time i have found that the only time that a player should attack the rim from higher than 3" is for a rim shot. And those are few and fair between.

If you don't believe what I'm saying just take a look at cadets, BK, SCV, and Cavies. Rim clicks are more for timing than anything else, so be gentle.

there is not much sound difference form a 12" attack and a 3" on a bass rim. even on a clacker.

So.... save yourself some money on rims and sticks for that matter.

AND BE CAREFUL!!

it was probably like everyone else said just wear and tear. watch how hard you are clicking the rims though because that could cause it. also watch you fingers because i've seen incidents where people have sliced their fingers open on split rims.

Last season we got new Yamaha Rim Savers, when we were putting them on apparently your suppose to screw the screw into the rim , maybe thats the problem , our drum line instructor thought that was crazy ( having to screw the screws in to the rims)

with the rim savers you dont have to screw them in, only if they fall off, which ive nver had a problem with, except one time with one rim saver. I bent it a little, and problem was solved. most of the time you just bang them on.

i totally know the feeling....our 4th bass did that and we had to order new ones.... by the way we have white Yamaha drums and black drum bras to protect them.........it might be the bass head though b/c some of ours warp and mess up the rim

In 2000 I was playing bass 6 in the PSU blue band and we had a spin visual in the middle of the cadence, every bass was SUPPOSED to spin the same way... well I spun the opposite way, right into bass 7, and split the rim which was probably 2 months old at that point. So we got a new rim and a new visual
