Hi everyone. I searched all over but couldn't find this.

I really like Phantom's bass drum tuning from 2003 to 2006 and I'm trying to figure out how they got those sounds. I know last year they used the new Powermax heads on their Pearl drums. Does anyone know if they they added any additional muffling, and if so, what did they do?

There's no secret way Brian Lowe (Chavez) does his drums. He just has a very good ear for balancing the head. I've never seen anyone tune a bass head as quickly and as accurately as he can.

Jin thank you for not giving us any info. there are different amounts of foam, and different places to put that in or outside of bass drums. i'm sure thats what husky is talking about.

As far as the last few years, I'm not sure, but the bass tech this year (not Brian - his name's John, he's new to staff but aged out from the Regiment in '05) muffled the drums using standard insulating foam, various thicknesses for the different drums. I'm not sure exactly what the thicknesses per drum are, but the foam was glued to the inside of the shell so that it was in contact with the head but not putting any pressure on it. I can't remember what kind of foam it was, but I can ask John the next time I see him... Probably the 19th, in Dallas...

Not sure who John is but the bass tech's name from the website is Corey Boise. Played bass drum at PR and was in the tenor line at Music City Mystique. Maybe he's not on tour this Summer but I know he was with them last year and also aged out in '05.

John might have left when they got on tour. Corey was there all through the winter, but there was no tech for a while during move-ins, and then John showed up. I promise you he was there gluing the foam on the inside of the basses, I saw him doing it the day I had my second doctors appointment. He was still there when I had to leave...

Apologies... I shouldn't say 'none of you'. Just DrumerKruse for that rude comment.

Ok, thanks for clarifying. I certainly know how to tune a bass drum. I just don't know their particular style and I've never seen any written documentation on their interval structure.

Boojum, that would be really cool if you could ask him how they do it. Jin_Nguyen, you marched several years, so would you mind sharing anything you've been taught?

Guys, there is another thread explaining different methods of bassdrum foaming and tuning. This thread is only staying open IF and only IF Phantom's tuning method is talked about. if the topic opens up too much...Then it will be closed.

If you are looking for different tuning methods. Go to the 1st thread entitled "Bassdrum Tuning Thread"

So I talked to John, I didn't ask about the muffling, but the intervals are fifths between the bottom drums and fourths between all the others. That way you get an octave between 5 and 3. The notes are, from 5 - 1: C G C F Bb.
When you think about this, it works really well, because a lot of DCI music is written or arranged in Bb - so you have a dominant - tonic pull between drums 2 and 1. So yeah. Good stuff... I hope that helps.

It was my understanding that they are going to Powermaxes. They may have extended the internal collar by an inch or so...it's amazing some of the concessions Remo will make for the various corps. Paul Rennick has always been a little "secret squirrel" about his tuning schemes. smile
