Because private lessons out of class as well as individual, self-motivated practice outside of the normal school day is a completely radical and worthless idea that wouldn't ever allow for improvement on a part.

Deeeefinitely didn't say that. The problem (here) is that very, very few of the individuals are motivated enough to even consider practicing outside of school.

How about your concert percussion works on the concert band music?

First few weeks of school, we do run throughs of the show and pep band during concert band classes.

Besides, since when should a supposed 'irresponsible' and 'undedicated' member be put in a bass line? Bass line should be some of your better and more dedicated players. A run sounds like crap with one person missing.

By all means, I agree. I don't know why people don't want to play bass, but if they don't have the responsibility/dedication to learn a bass part, why would I trust them with a set of tenors or a snare...? :/

Gah, back on topic, I'm thinkin' that mayhaps the rules about concert band aren't quite up to it during the off season. Second semester of school, we focus more on concert music, and though it'd be beneficial for percussionists to be in the class, I can't see how it would murder them if they weren't.

Unless they don't pick up a pair of sticks until July. There might be a problem then. >.<

I dunno. I thought the rules seemed kinda immature. They seemed kinda pessimistic, too.

Here are the rules in our drumline handbook:

-Do not be late. If you are going to be late call someone

-Do make sure that if you are on time that you help the whole team to get ready for rehearsal (esp. pit equipment)

-Do not make noise or play on your instrument when the director, staff, or section leaders are speaking.

-Do have fun in helping to teach others what you already know so that the whole section is ready

-Do take your music home and practice it.

-Do not ridicule eachother

-Do remember that the pit and battery are one team and must work together on and off the field

Also, it defeats the purpose of telling people to be professional if one of your rules is "don't suck". That seems like an un-professional thing to say.

yeah 3 & 4 seem a little questionable to me too.. but at my school as Sajre said, marching band is an extra curricular activity. We have many, many scheduling conflicts at my high school and half of the honors kids CAN'T schedule band. Its near impossible. That may be why we only had 18 kids in concert band last year....

I can understand these rules though. It would be really nice to learn rudiments and show parts in concert band. Unfortunately we only have one concert band class a year and its usually if not always in the second semester and first or fourth block.
