I don't understand...why is your BD mad when you're trying to make the band sound better by making the drumline sound better? Is your BD mad just because your leading band AND your not a senior or your not section leader?

Oh I see. You can try and tell him that you guys can be really good and still have fun. Do you normally not have fun at practices?

I know this probably isn't the "correct" answer, but march drum corps. In 1 year of drum corps, you play for about as much as (or more than) all four of your high school years combined. From what I've seen at a drum corps tryout, one of the biggest differences is that everyone is motivated to be there, but in high school, lots of people just dont care.

That's Ok. I'm Drum Captain and my percussion instructer is getting mad at me for trying to help the group. He says my job is "to motivate and keep the group disciplined, and nothing more."

well, if you can't get you section leader to do it, just keep doin it yourself. If he doesn't want you to sound better because of more practice, then that is his/her problem

Um, definitely not. If the BD expresses a problem with something you don't just keep doing it anyway. That's definitely not good leadership. If the BD says not to do it then don't do it, it's an adult-to-kid respect thing. Going against what an adult says is definitely going to be counterproductive. Have you tried having a sit down with the BD and explaining what you're doing in a respectful kid-to-adult manner? If he's still not interested after that you might want to leave it alone, you've got to respect the BD man, even when he clearly has his head between his cheeks.

As if the kids at Ayala are miserable? I'd venture to guess the kids in a good program have a whole lot more fun than students in bands that suck.

When students can do "anything they want", it's a social activity or club, not a class.

If you haven't tried already, explain to him that your section leader is too lazy to do anything, so you're trying to help with what he's not helping with. If he's still mad at you, just set up rehearsals at your house or somewhere else. I don't know other then that. After all, I am a genuine idiot!

Does the rest of the section want to do the extra practices?
If they do, then you should tell your BD that and you should have no problem.
If everyone wants to practice more and have fun doing it, then there should be no problem.
