scotland county high school...

a marching regiment known locally for guys wearing kilts and playing pipes.

at a competition our drumline encountered the Scots walking to the warmup area, and of course immediately we yelled "nice skirts", "looking cute", etc

what we didnt expect was the skill level of those guys was beyond many DCI corps i've seen. their bassline warmed up with 32-note runs, the snare players demo'ed some intense visual techniques that put us to shame...

moral of the story--- dont judge a band by its cover... or lack thereof.

Pipebands usually have some great skills to them. They have their own unique style which is pretty cool too.

Its kind of like our band for the victoria days parade. Everyone was all dressed up in marching atire. And we had tie dye t shirts and fake dreadlocks. But we could keep up with the other bands.

Wow man, that was so deep. But really, I think kilts are cool.

Remember one thing.....Many Pipe and Drum bands have people who have played in many DCI bands from all ages...When people get older and no longer go too school...what better way to keep chops than to join a pipe band....Festivals and Memorials and Parades and last but not least practices...I played in drum and bugle when I was 16-21...After all that where else do people really go that have still bleed DCI?

You can do DCA and wear a kilt if you make it to rehearsals in Racine, Wisconsin to play with the Kilties.

yeah, I'm with the Ulster Scottish Pipe Band (www.ulsterscottish.org)

seems like there aren't too many of us here

where you go after school all depends on the style that you like to play. DCI, Pipe band and fife and drum corps are all different, and its just a matter of preference. I might be a little biased, but i'd say join a pipe band

That would depend on what style you were used too. I was always doing more open roll and single stroke rolling in band before the pipe and drum. Some of the rudiments are noted the same but differ in how they are actually sticked and sound. More rolls are played closed or Mashed...buzzed. If you have a good grasp on the essential rudiments...I dont think you will have a problem converting from each style.

Ooh. And also, the fact that they are a PIPEBAND makes me picture a band with an aura of unapproachable pride and honor. Are they nice? Are they induction-friendly (in the sense that it's not completely impossible as the President's Own seems)?

You are absolutely right. Also, pipe bands really practice efficiently for an outstanding performance. I have seen a pipe band march in a parade, and they were outstanding.

I wouldn't say pipe bands are common in the U.S., but they're not extremely rare, either.

If you're in Northern California, try to make it to Pleasanton on Labor Day weekend to check out the Highland Games at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. Plenty of good drumming to see there.
