Okay... I'll try and make this as quick and sweet as possible. I've noticed that there really isn't a thread with all of the possible sound opprotunities and techniques required to play cymbals. I myself am section leader of my own high school, and i kind of want to make cymbals more "interesting" for my cymbal players. In other words, i'd like them to have a thorough knowledge of their instrument. Well, anyways... if anyone wants to chuck away at this one... be my guest... you'd do everyone a favor on here. Thanks guys... you're the best!

Keep drumming

What do you want us to write here? Techniques, possible sound/moves?

There are several books and videos out there that give this type of information.

Seriously, pick up any of Jeff's stuff (the post above).

Even if you don't dig the style, the basics are all there and won't steer you wrong.

If you're lucky he might do a clinic for you.

And if you want a different approach (Not bagging down on Mr. Kozol. He knows his stuff, and is good at what he does), get the Eddie Capps book, Cymbal Technique 101.

It may be "older" and it may be hard to find, but you can try to find Thom Hannum's 1984 thesis "The Cymbal: Its Standard and Special Use in Contemporary Marching Ensemble." Also, if you or anyone can find it, I would love to take a look at it.

We have 3 cymbals on the line that I teach and one day during practice they said that they never get to do any interesting stuff... So what I did was thought of some things that would make their playing way more fun and interesting. I'm sure that these things were already thought of, but some of the things I came up with were:

Antiphonal Cymbal Playing

We tried this the very next practice and it added a ton of flavor to the show... We had all three pick up the left cymbal vertically and the other horizontally and sort of "pinged" them together antiphonally, this is really effective when you do a nice big crescendo and than batter falls silent and it's just cymbals doing a really fast antiphonal part...

Spins

The school I teach at never taught the cymbals any visuals, always remember though visuals come AFTER playing. I have seen a lot of lines that have their cymbals spinning them all around when they can't even play a crash properly... Use your own judgement.

If you do decide that some visuals are indeed needed, than the first place to start is during the start and finish of shows. Also during times where they are visible is a great time to add these. (We added a few visuals right before the antiphonal part of the show).

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but I hope this helps your cause, or maybe someone elses...
Have fun!
