"Treat your drum as if it were your own"

Hey everyone, my first post here. I've been lurking for a very long time, just never had any reason to post before now. The school that I teach for is lucky enough to be getting a brand spankin new set of drums very soon, so I am trying to put together a list of "rules" for the kids on how to treat the new drums when they get here. They don't especially mistreat the drums in any way now, but they do lack some common sense when it comes to different things that can happen to them. So I was hoping you guys could help me think of any things that I may have overlooked. The more obvious the better (short of "do not throw the drum across the room"). The drums we are getting are the Pearl Championship w/ the brushed silver finish. Thanks in advance.

If they are brand new they should have cases. If they are not being used for practice or performace they better be in those cases out of range for the wanna be drummers. I used the weekly inspection if something is wrong with a drum and it is obvious it isn't from normal playing who ever the drum was assigned to has to pay to get it fixed.

When they set them down, esspecially the tenors, they shouldn't just easily drop them down. Their hand(s) come off of the drum whenever it is completely on the ground.

Set bass drums on their carriers if you're putting them on the ground. (I really hope people from my line see this one *cough*, 3rd bass).

It would be worth buying the diapers for them. Yamaha and Pearl each offer them. Or you can have them safety pin towels to them. Before getting our new set of drums and diapers my rule was if your drum was naked you couldn't set it down. Also I have my students AND THEIR PARENTS sign a contract stating that they will be responsible for damage.

Well, heres the rule rundown my kids abide by: 1: The drum should only be without its cover "naked" during competetive performances and halftime shows in great weather. 2: Drums do not touch the ground, period. During games and rehearsals, drums are on stands when not on bodies. 3: No member should attempt to tune or perform maintenance on the equipment unless asked to by an instructor. 4: Drums are to be wrapped and cased when not in use. This includes break periods longer than 1 hour. Once cased, the cases must be stacked top to bottom (1 stack of basses, 1 stack of tenors, and 1 stack of snares) to further discourage wannabes from playing. 5: You and ONLY YOU are to play on or carry your equipment. Should any other player be seen with your equipment, even a drumline member, you will be benched for one week (including performances) and could face being kicked out. These rules have worked out quite well, anyone who sees our line would agree. 5 year old Yamaha basses, 2 year old Yamaha Tenors and 20(+) year old Stingray snares, all which look brand new. Hope this helps, and congrats on the new stuff!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Now I just have to wait for them to ship. It's looking like they won't even make it here before the end of marching season.

Ross, Great rules man! Ya, Pearl took months to get my drums done and shipped to Columbus Percussion from their Tennessee Factory (Or was it Kentucky?). I wouldn't hold your breath for them to arrive!
