give them there own solo in your cadence and what not.

Spice up all bass parts.

Tell em'(and i dont advise this b/c it could backfire on you but)that if they dont like it they can either move to cymbals or pit and that theyll have a chance to move up next year

ive been on bass line for 2 years going on my 3rd year( im fixing to be a sophmore.) and im finally on 1st bass. let freshman try out for whatever they want. it worked for my line

A super idea, if they can handle it.

Again, useless if they can't play.

Why would you suggest something you don't recommend?

And way to discount the skill sets required to participate in the cymbal line or up front.

This is great unless they have no clue that just because they audition on an instrument doesn't guarantee them a spot.

The summary of the issue at the HS level has been covered a few times already- most hs bass lines are not very good due to less skilled or experienced players and parts that are not particularly exciting. Neither of those things can happen unless the kids push themselves to get better. The staff can only write what they can handle.

Remember- simple and clean is always better than tough and dirty...for the book, anyway wink

Personally, I loved playing on the bass line. I wish that I had spent a few more years on it.

Enjoying the bass line is all about attitude. If everyone (especially upperclassmen) view making the bass line as a punishment, who is going to want it? I hope that your band director realizes that the bass line is one of the most important sections of the drumline. Each and every person on the line is playing a solo instrument. There needs to be a leader, preferably an upperclassman who wants to be there and wants to do good.

Start with some easy split exercises, learning more and more difficult runs as you get better. Putting together an award winning (and fun) bass line will not happen overnight. If there is a serious attitude problem towards playing bass, the transformation could take years. Someone who is dedicated to having a good line and wants to see the bass line to succeed needs to step in to inject some enthusiasm and pride into the players.

in my line there really is no "hatred" towards getting bass drum. Freshman are put on cymbals.....i dunno but when i got bass my sophomore year after playing cymbals i was the happiest kid ever...even now i think bass is one of the funnest drums to play

^^^^agreed i think bass is more fun with all the crazy splits and all the jammed packed notes that the snares and tenors cant pull off on their own
