Okay... once again... the search engine did nothing for me... so monitors... feel free to delete this post if its already out there... if not...

What type of stretches does everyones drumline perform before playing? Do you stretch after you play? How long do you stretch for? Do you stretch before you warm up or while you're warming up? Is there such a thing of stretching TOO MUCH?

Well... that sums it up. Opinions please

Usually we do things like shake our hands out, and a few other hand stretches. The first one i usually do is press my fingers against the palm of my other hand, which stretches the muscle in your forearm. Another is bending the back of your hand down to stretch the wrist, or pulling back your thumb, which also helps if it's stretched out. We really don't do any arm/leg/body stretches unless it's a rehearsal, but you probably weren't asking about those anyway.

For most lines I've been with, the closest we'd come to "stretching" is eight on a hand at a moderate tempo, nice and high. If my hands or wrists felt tight, I might stretch them myself before practice, but it's normally not necessary. The only formal stretching we did was before doing drill.

I stretch by twisting my arms, pulling back and pushing down on the hand (if you put your hand in a fist it loosens a muscle too) I spend about 5 minutes with those, warmup with slow eights, and slowly build up. Once I get the the moderate things such as rolls and flams I stop, and stretch my arms out again, and then dive in.

Our drumline started doing group stretches during band camp. Sometimes they're really focused and help with that, other times they're goofy and kill time. But it's a full body stretch and does make your muscles feel better than without. As for hands, I have issues and always pull my hand back over my head and then slowly down. but nothing with the group. In pit there was some real weird stuff with some strange names but those just helped you relax. didn't do much
