My guess with the HULKA helicopter is that it may have been invented by our very own HULKA....

Backsticking was brought to drum corps in 1959 by the Skyliners, I believe.

Well, almost right.
Backsticking was actually introduced by the 1958 Air Force Quartet. Just thought I'd update on that little tidbit.

The Hulka Helicopter was indeed invented by yours truly in '93. I laugh at the "invented" part because Casey did the hard part coming up with the claw... all I did was think "hey, why can't it be done with two hands?".
You're so clever, Hulka

Ahh, yes, thats right. I knew that it was around that time period. I don't know what made me think the Skyliners.

Heh heh, now you know!
It's also quite odd that the Air Force Quartet wasn't actually a quartet.

When did backsticking start to be incorporated into rolls? When was there a change from the "old-school" style of backsticking (which is more of a vertical motion) to the "new-school" style of backsticking (which is more of a slicing motion)?
